EVE stuck on splashscreen after upgrade to 2.0.3-84

Just upgraded to EVE 2.0.3-84 on ESXi host, previous version was .71? Anyway, I used what I thought was the recommended procedure to upgrade from my older ver to the latest... here is what I did:

/opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a stopall
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
shutdown -r now

Now EVE is stuck on the splash screen at boot. Help?

UPDATE: EVE console eventually appears and says to "^D" or "systemctl default" to try again... but just repeats reboot and get stuck on EVE console splash screen again. I can get to the EVE CLI, but don't know what to do to fix this.

UPDATE2: Just did the same exact process and version upgrades on EVE running on VMWare workstation v12 and experienced no problems at all. Is this related to VMWare ESXi ? Running ESXi v5.5

UPDATE3: Lots of strange behavior on both ESXi and VMWare workstation upgrades. If I "shutdown -r," EVE boots to splashscreen and freezes for about 5 minutes before it says to look at journeld log or do systemctl default, etc. However, If I "shutdown -h," or power off, then restart, EVE will boot. Very unusual and happens on both EVE installs on VMWare Workstation and ESXi 5.5

UPDATE4: Problem appears to be getting worse. Now EVE consistently gets stuck on splashscreen and will not boot, no matter how it is shutdown or restarted... I'm basically without a useful EVE installation at this time.

UPDATE5: My upgrade is dead, EVE refuses to boot past the splashscreen now. Is there any place that I can download previous versions of EVE, I'm looking for .71 release. Or, boot into single user mode and try to fix the broken 2.0.3-84 release on my ESXi host? P.S. Never had any issues running EVE, WebIOU, etc... this is the first major, major problem for me.

UPDATE6: Sad days, just started restoral of April 2017 version, whatever that was, of my EVE installation... guess I'll be stuck in the past from now on

UPDATE7: Not one to easily give up, I restored my EVE (v2.0.3-68) back onto ESXi 5.5 and that version works just perfect. I then carefully followed the upgrade notes and it DOES NOT WORK. EVE 2.0.3-84 back to the broken state again and just like the original problem, will never boot. Is there a way that I can choose how far I want to upgrade? Example, I'd like to restore v2.0.3-68 and step upgrade back to 2.0.3-71 and stop there.

UPDATE8: Just attempted a fresh install onto ESXi 5.5 using the "EVE-20171007.iso" (v2.0.3-84), and it does not work, have the same problem as I did after the upgrade for version .71. I've tried just about all I understand and am not making any progress, I'm officially stuck without a working EVE solution unless I go all the way back to v2.0.3-68. Still hoping for a solution

UPDATE9: Never give up! Solution was to upgrade ESXi to 6.0.U2 (tried ESXi 6.5, but many, many SSD disconnects, your mileage may vary). EVE 2.0.3-84 is now happily running on ESXi 6.0.U2

Thanks for the link, but it appears to be unrelated to my problem. My problem is not that it takes so long to shutdown. I did read the changelog before upgrading and followed the recommended steps based on my previous version. My problem is now it will just not boot on my ESXi platform and remains frozen on the EVE splashscreen during boot. I hate to thibnk of it, but I may have to do a complete re-install of EVE and go back to version .71 just to keep a stable and usable version.

Press escape key and see what is wrong, It is all you what works for you better which version.

Many people upgrade to latest and all working well.

Boots right up if I remove all my vNICs, but obviously not a working EVE. Could the Ubuntu image have messed up my NIC drivers? I've tried the other ESXi vNIC options E100, VMXNET2 and VMXNET. The netwrk serive starts with the VMXNET2 vNIC, but now it's stuck on "Failed to start login service."

Short of trying a reinstall, I'm at a loss here.

I'm giving up on getting v2.0.3-84 to run on ESXi 5.5. I'll have to keep a watch on the site to see if there are any updates to get a working version EVE and in the meantime, will have to resort to using an alternative solution. Bummer, I've been with the WebIOU and EVE journey from the beginning and donated $$$ to the cause. Sad to move on, but I need a stable solution and can't afford to be in constant fear of clicking the upgrade button. P.S., I was never a fan of Ubuntu under the hood of EVE.

v84 is most stable and bugless version..

and recommended VM ware versions are:
VM workstation 12.5.X and higher
ESXi 6.0 and higher
actually on on 5.5 I did installs of v84 without issues...
