vIOS vs. IOL/IOU vs. Dynamips images

Hey guys,

I'm sure this must have been answered times before, but still wanted to understand what's the difference between the 3 above. My perspective is that from doing CCIE Security. Here are my questions:
  • Can I use the dynamips images to do full switching along with all the capabilities?
If not, why should I use the dynamips images at all?
In terms of functionality, which has the most to offer?
Which image would be the best for L2 and for L3 for CCIE security practise?
Thank you!

Actually best and non system hitting resource images would be IOL
IOL L2 IRON which is actually L3 switch and does mab and dot1x
and IOL L3 router 15.4.2T, does all necessary security stuff like dmvpn, getvpn, CA on router, vrf aware vpn

vIOS not bad, but hit CPU use. Not all vIOS L2 switch supporting mab and dot1x
Dynaipms is very old, as routers maybe not bad, but as switch..I prefer IOL or vIOS switches

my preffered are:
IOL L3 router: L3-ADVENTERPRISEK9-M-15.4-2T.bin
IOL Switch: i86bi_linux_l2-ipbasek9-ms.high_iron_aug9_2017b.bin

Dont ask to share images, it is not allowed in this forum...

Thank you very much for your response.

Reg. L2 IOL, does the image that you've mentioned also support DACL and Trustsec, MACSEC?

IOL works normal

BTW, Iron image has some issues with forwarding transit traffic. Traffic to switch itself is OK, but by unknown reason it is not forwarding transit traffic. Better use 15.2(a) or 15.2(b) L2 images

You mean, on new Iron images need to turn off ip cef to get traffic forwarded?

I would stick to vIOS images.

IOU ones are only 10Mb Ethernet. I agree these are faster nodes tho.

Just had to rebuild an IOU lab with vIOS routers because of this.
Hope it saves you time. ;)
